By Dr John Davies, an astronomer who recently retired from ROE, Edinburgh after 37 years, including a tour of 8 years at a telescope in Hawaii.
The talk will cover all about the main asteroid belt - where it is, how it was discovered and what did we know before the space age! John will take us through flybys of these main belt asteroids by spacecraft destined for other destinations. We will look at The Dawn mission to orbit Vesta and Ceres and some of it’s discoveries - and if that’s not enough, we will look at future missions such as Lucy and Psyche which are already in flight!
