What’s happening in space this week
This week offers some real treats for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts. First, keep an eye out for 3I/ATLAS — the interstellar visitor previously hidden in the Sun’s glare is emerging in the morning sky and (with a telescope) may be within reach.
Meanwhile, the planet Uranus is shining at around magnitude +5.6 this month, meaning under a dark-sky site it may even be visible to the naked eye or easily in binoculars.
Closer to home, the famed Leonids meteor shower is building up for its November peak around the 17th–18th.
The Escapade Mission launches to Mars on board Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy launch vehicle. Only the vehicles second launch, it will carry twin spacecraft to study how the solar wind interacts with the Martian magnetosphere and drives atmospheric escape.
Also notable: November’s full moon — the so-called “Beaver Moon” or “Super Hunter’s Moon” — promises to be the largest and brightest full moon of the year. A great photo-op if you’re set up for lunar imaging or just want to enjoy a luminous sky.
Club heads-up
We’re excited to announce that on 11 November, our club — Dalgety Bay Astronomy Club — will host a special talk as part of our Astrophotography Division with guest speaker, Astrophotographer and YouTuber Helena Cochran. Learn all about Helena’s journey capturing deep-space images and learn how you can get started in the hobby too!
Also if you’re reading this, you will know we now have a brand spanking new website! With the support from the Royal Astronomical Society’s grant we are able to create this fantastic site which will be a huge benefit to our growing community and also inspire others to come check out our club. You can find out all the latest news as well as a list of club events and lots more!
